Research on the black scallop followed that on the king scallop. Indeed, over the 1973-1975 " spadework » period, it has been demonstrated that the roadsted of Brest was: - an overexploited king scallop deposit; the broodstock not being able to ensure a satisfying renewal of the species. - a black scallop production deposit (hundreds of tonnes). In parallel, the collection trials provided null results for the king scallop but very interesting results for the black scallop (thousands of spats per collector). From 1976 onwards, the spat collecting operations did not focus on king scallop juveniles anymore, but on black scallop. |

Two main conditions are necessary for the extensive culture of king scallop: 1.The getting of spats, 2.A good survival rate for these spats in their natural environment. These two criteria enable the definition of the technical standards giving way to an economic analysis. Until now, the only solution to a juvenile production is their collection in their natural environment, on high adult density deposits. At the time being, out of all the French deposits, that of Saint-Brieuc is the only one answering this characteristic. However, even in this case, spat collection has not yet reached the necessary reliability. Indeed, the amount of spat collected for a year will rely on two main factors: 1.The state of the brood stock, 2.The climatic conditions. |

Since 1973 some pectinides spat collection experiments have been conducted by the Fishery team of the Brittany Oceanology Centre, on two deposits exploited by commercial fishing: the roadsted of Brest and especially the St-Brieuc Bay The experiment carried out in 1973 was the first French attempt on this group of species and the results have been very encouraging: although the technology used was rudimentary, the best collectors enabled the collection of 30 to 50 king scallops (Pecten maximus) each and of 6,000 to 8,000 scallops (Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularis). The research protocol used enabled the determination of the sequential aspect of the fixation, and of the growth speed of the young animals. In addition, the difference between both deposits... |

Six batches of king scallop juveniles of different origins and obtained either by collection in their natural habitat (Saint-Brieuc, Scotland, Ireland), or by hatchery production in Brest in 1981, 1982, 1983, have been sown, at a size of 3 cm, in the roadsted of Brest between 1977 and 1983. Their growth, strongly linked to the evolution of the temperature, is well-described by a model, including a sinusoidal modulation, by Von Bertalanffy. The growth of the scallops collected in Saint-Brieuc, Scotland and Ireland, differentiates from that of the individuals from their original area and shows similarities with that of the scallops produced in Brest. Consequently, there must be an adaptation of the growth to the environmental conditions of the roadsted of... |

The efficiency of the fishing drags in the Saint Brieuc Bay, Brittany, has been determined through the analysis of the tracks left on the seabed. The results, which focus mostly on the age class n°2 (2.5 years), show that the efficiency and the damages caused by the drags vary heavily according to the nature of the seabed. For soft bottoms, the average efficiency is 67 % and the global damage is 2 %. Concerning hard bottoms, the values are respectively 30 % and 17 %. These efficiency results combined with those of a dragging expedition in a set sector of the Saint-Brieuc Bay enable a direct assessment of the abundance. A result treatment method deriving from the geostatistical theory is used: it takes into account the spatial structure of the king scallop... |

The efficiency of the scallop dredge used in baie de St Brieuc (Britany) has been directly determined by divers swimming along the track marks left on the bottom. Results, concerning essentially year class two, show that efficiency and damage caused by the dredge on scallops are highly variable according to nature of the sea bed. On smooth grounds, the average efficiency is 67% and the average percentage for severely damged scallops is 2% ; on rough grounds, theses percentages are respectively 30% and 17%. These results associated with a dredge survey on a particular area of the baie de St Brieuc allow an assessment of scallops abundance. The statistical method used, relevant to the geostatistic theory, takes into account the scallop spatial distribution... |

We present a cathodoluminescence (CL) study of growth layer deposition in the shell of the oyster Crassostrea gigas. CL is based on the physical properties of lattice-bound manganese (Mn2+), which is the main activator in calcium carbonate. Our study involved chemical marking by immersing individuals in seawater to which manganese chloride had been added, and subsequent reading of the shell with CL microscopy coupled with numeric treatment of microphotographs; CL emission was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope coupled to a spectrometer. Since the marking did not harm the oysters, repeated markings were possible, allowing validation of the inferences made from analysis of the shell rings. Oysters reared in a French Mediterranean lagoon (Thau... |

The UE project "GENEPHYS", initiated by the IFREMER laboratory GAP-La Tremblade (Génétique Aquaculture et Pathologie) and CREMA-L'Houmeau (Centre de Recherche en Ecologie marine et Aquaculture), aims to establish the relationships between physiological traits involved in growth (oxygen consumption, absorption efficiency, scope for growth) and their genetic bases (determinism, variability within and among populations) in cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. The main objectives are : 1. To express the maximum variability of growth, both at the larval stage and at the adult stage, in a oyster population originating from parents of various origins. 2. To check the persistence over the time, of growth performance and related physiological functions. 3. To explain... |

Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingi, was studied for an annual cycle, from March 1997 to April 1998, in the lagoon of Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia). Growth in shell and in tissue were measured every 15 days on three successive age groups of cultivated pearl oysters. At the same time, hydrobiological parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, suspended particulate matter), known to have influence on bivalve growth, were followed each week during culture. No seasonal trend was observed in hydrobiological parameters, except for temperature which varied between 26 degrees C and 31 degrees C. The potential food for pearl oysters (particulate organic matter, POM, mg l(-1)) was slightly... |

The history of French oyster culture consists of a succession of developmental phases using different species, followed by collapses caused by diseases. The indigenous species Ostrea edulis was replaced first with Crassostrea angulata, then C. gigas. France is now the top producer and consumer of oysters in Europe, producing around 120,000 t of the cupped oyster C. gigas annually, and an additional 1500 t of the flat oyster O. edulis. Cupped oysters are produced all along the French coast from natural and hatchery spat. Various structures are used to collect spat from the wild. After a growing-on period, oysters are Cultivated by three main methods: (1) on-bottom culture in the intertidal zone or in deep water, (2) off-bottom culture in plastic mesh bags... |

In situ clearance rate (CR) and biodeposition of the black pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, were followed during several field experiments from 1996 to 1998 in the lagoon of Takapoto. Serial measurements of total particulate matter (TPM, mg l(-1)), particulate inorganic matter (PLM, mg l(-1)), and particulate organic matter (POM, mg l(-1)) were related to meteorological conditions, especially wind speed. As a general case, POM and PLM increased with wind speed. Nevertheless, PLM increased faster than POM so that the organic content (OC, %) of the TPM decreased progressively when wind speed increased. These TPM variations induced direct changes in feeding processes of P. margaritifera. CR (l h(-1)) averaged 22 l h(-1) for a pearl oyster of 1 g dry... |

We grew Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in a French Mediterranean coastal breeding area, the Thau lagoon, to examine the influence of stocking density on their growth and quality (i.e. condition index and biochemical composition). Oysters were reared on ropes suspended on a culture table for 15 months between March 1999 to June 2000 at 8 different densities involving two cross factors: the number of ropes per square (NR, i.e. 30, 50,65 and 100 ropes) and the number of oysters per rope (NO, i.e. 78 and 120 oysters). Environmental variables (temperature, salinity, dissolved O2) and trophic conditions (chlorophyll a, suspended particulate matter) were estimated fortnightly to characterise conditions prevailing inside as well as around the experimental... |
